The Portico will be transformed into one of the city’s most unique musical backdrops as the historic library hosts an intimate evening of chamber music this April.

On Thu 2 Apr, the Talland Quartet will perform Beethoven’s turbulent exploration of morality, and one of his most revered creations, String Quartet No 15 in A Minor. This composition was reportedly a significant influence on T.S. Elliot’s poetry collection, Four Quartets, making its performance at The Portico extra apt.

Before that will be the chance to hear Tabakova’s 2019 The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings, inspired by one of Joan Miro’s paintings; the work’s simplicity and repetition create a folk-like quality in the music.

The Talland Quartet formed during their time at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and are dedicated to sharing their passion for chamber music.

Named after Talland Bay in Cornwall, the quartet have won multiple prizes at the RNCM and are currently continuing their studies at the college on the Quartet Studio programme. Previous work includes supporting Anna Meredith at Manchester International Festival, and the outfit are currently working on a commission with composer and drummer, Eden Longson.
