This Sunday, The Big Burnage Parade will celebrate the people, places and stories that have shaped the suburb throughout the years.

The project is led by several local partners, including Burnage Library, Burnage Community Centre, Westcroft Community Centre and Didsbury Arts Festival, to ‘shine a light on one of Manchester’s often overlooked neighbourhoods’.

They are working alongside Manchester City Council, artists Phoebe Foxtrot and Heather Skowood, producers Leeway Creative Production, and a wide network of community groups, schools and faith organisations.

The parade will begin at 11.30am and finish at 1pm. The procession will begin between Avon and Mauldeth Road, pass Westcroft Community Centre, before ending at Fog Lane Park on Parkville Road.

In the lead-up to the event, local people have taken part in workshops across the area, helping to design banners, costumes and decorations. A standout feature of the parade will be 40 specially created banners displayed along the route on lampposts. Each banner celebrates a person with a connection to Burnage, either from the past or present, nominated by members of the community. The designs have all been inspired by ideas developed during these local workshops.

Following the parade, the celebrations will continue with a free finale event at Fog Lane Park from 1pm – 5pm. The event also marks the park’s centenary year.

Parade-goers can look forward to a lively afternoon packed with activities, from learning circus skills to trying Manchester salsa, alongside performances from local artists. Tibetan Kitchen and Melano Gelato will also be on hand to keep festivalgoers fuelled up.

Councillor Basat Sheikh, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The Big Burnage Parade is about celebrating the people who make this area what it is. It will be the first parade held there, and it’s been brilliant to see so many residents, groups and schools getting involved and giving Burnage the recognition it has always deserved. We hope it brings a real sense of pride to Burnage and gives everyone a chance to come together, have fun and feel part of something special on the day.”
