Well apparently October’s the month for literature festivals, with the big’un in Manchester, a slightly smaller one in Chester and now also one in Rochdale. The competition may be strong, but the first Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival looks set to hold its own in the calendar of literary celebrations, boasting big names like Carol Ann Duffy, Gyles Brandreth, Simon Armitage, Akala and Susannah Oldfield, to give the Manchester and Chester equivalents a run for their money. Hoping to expand and inspire visitors’ minds, the festival’s stimulating and diverse lineup includes literary talks, award-winning rappers, writing workshops and soap star insights from Kevin Sanderson (Corrie’s Curly Watts).

Fri 25 – Sun 27 Oct, Rochdale Central Library, Bell Street, Rochdale, OL16 1JZ, Some events FREE; Others £5, www.rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk
