Opera North has two big, bold productions coming up this month at The Lowry: Verdi’s gripping and thrilling Rigoletto, and Tchaikovsky’s heartbreaking classic, Eugene Onegin.
Both productions have received rave reviews, with critics awarding them four and five stars. Both have a small number of tickets left, with prices starting from £15.

Opera North: Rigoletto
Giuseppe Verdi
Thu 12 Nov and Sat 14 Nov
This award-winning production by leading UK theatre artist Femi Elufowoju Jr was described as ‘chillingly excellent’ by the Guardian, and is known as a fantastic show for first-time opera-goers thanks to its believable characters and memorable music.
It tells the story of outsider Rigoletto who secretly tries to protect his beloved daughter, Gilda, from the advances of a womanising duke. When the duke seduces Gilda, Rigoletto plots revenge, with tragic consequences.
Described as ‘a powerful tale of love, betrayal, revenge and sacrifice,’ the opera features some of the most famous music in the genre, including the instantly recognisable aria ‘La donna è mobile’.
Opera North: Eugene Onegin
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Fri 13 Nov
This mesmerising new production from Opera North, Irish National Opera and Opera Queensland is a deeply affecting portrait of love, regret and missed chances.
It tells the story of a sophisticated but emotionally detached young man who rejects the love of country girl Tatyana, only to realise his feelings for her years later. By then, Tatyana has married a wealthy prince and, despite still loving Onegin, refuses to abandon her husband. Onegin is left to face the consequences of his earlier rejection.
It features some of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful and emotionally charged music, particularly in Tatyana’s famous ‘Letter Scene’.
