A spectacular new show by Joana Vasconcelos opens today in Manchester. Fresh from her success representing Portugal at the 55th Venice Biennale, Manchester Art Gallery is hosting one of its most significant shows to date, showcasing Vasconcelos world-famous large-scale sculptures, in the gallery’s Victorian surrounds. The show includes 20 of the artist’s key works as well as new works. Look out for pink feather-clad helicopters and cars covered in machine guns, filled with soft toys. Of particular note is a huge new textile-based piece called Britannia 2014, referring to Manchester historic role in the textiles trade. This cascades down several floors of the building into the atrium. The new show is one of the first times in recent years that the museum has charged for a show. Following the success of similar pay-for to enter shows at London galleries like V&A and Tate Modern, we wonder how the format will play out here.
