Band on the Wall hosts a two-day showcase of record label Gondwana this weekend. Featuring GoGo Penguin on Saturday and Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra on Sunday, the mini festival highlights music put out by the Manchester-based independent label, which has won acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum and Mr Scruff. Saturday’s headliners draw on influences including Squarepusher, Brian Eno, Debussy, John Cage and Massive Attack, while Mammal Hands, another trio who have recently signed to Gondwana, provide support. On Sunday, trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall will be performing with his Gondwana Orchestra, a seven-piece ensemble featuring trumpet, sax, flute and harp. The group will be playing music from the forthcoming Gondwana release When The World Was One – which promises deep, soulful, modal jazz drawing on the legacy of Alice Coltrane and influenced by Halsall’s love of Eastern music and spiritual jazz.
