Trauma presents Tabernak! Modern Quebecois Cinema season at MMU

With only a few notable exceptions – including the work of director Xavier Dolan – Quebecois cinema remains relatively overlooked outside of Canada, despite a definite increase in both output and quality in recent years. Coinciding with Jean-Baptiste Day (an annual celebration of French-Canadian culture), the Trauma film group present a series of modern Quebecois movies in a bid to introduce us to this under-appreciated cinematic region. First up, from the director of the critically acclaimed recent release Dallas Buyers Club, coming-of-age tale C.R.A.Z.Y. (pictured, Mon 23 Jun) tackles issues of sexuality and homophobia in 1960s and 1970s Quebec. Return the following Monday (30 Jun) for Bon Cop, Bad Cop, a buddy cop movie with a dark edge, before Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated drama Incendies closes the season on Monday 7 July. All three films will be prefaced by a brief introduction, touching on such topics as Quebec’s film history and the province’s relationship with the rest of Canada.
