Featuring a marriage of two key organisations in Manchester, arguably the world’s most popular film series and a double helping of a well-loved acoustic showcase, this week’s roundup of freebies is practically heaving with its heavyweight names.

Oxjam launch at the Levenshulme Market
The Levy Market is already kind of a big deal, but this weekend it hogs even more of the limelight with the launch of Oxjam’s summer residency. Having been given their very own covered (Manchester-proof) seating area, the Oxjam team will be providing the vibes with live singers, bands and acts, so that each week you can grab a satisfying blend of awesome local traders, tasty street food and a good splash of entertainment. Like a good gin and tonic – or that brief time when everyone was obsessed with the zany combo of strawberries and balsamic – we say this one looks set to be up there with the world’s best unions.

Star Wars Day at The Printworks
In the build up to Episode 7 Star Wars frenzy is officially back in full swing, and although it’s not due for release until next year, this Sunday The Printworks are getting on the bandwagon with a free day of intergalactic goodness. There will be guest signings from actors of the original saga including Brian Wheeler, Pam Rose, Derek Lyons and even the world’s greenest bounty hunter Greedo, a.k.a Paul Blake – along with live music, merchandise stalls, exhibitions and Cosplay competitions. So head down for a fix of the force – and have fun you will.

Acoustic Bhuna double whammy at Band on the Wall
Band on the Wall’s Acoustic Bhuna is one of the best gifts that Manchester has ever received, not only because it’s totally free, but also because it gives a platform to some of the best and most intriguing local acts around – and this weekend it becomes the gift that keeps on giving as the usual format gives way to a special double whammy. The normal Sunday setup still applies, this time with 5-piece band Rook and the Ravens (pictured) as they return from their US tour with their ‘self-assured rock/folk/pop’, Manchester-based harpist and songwriter Quincey May Brown and vocal harmony group The Voice Collective. However, in addition to this you’ll find a very special Friday night showcase, featuring guitarist Jamie Brewer, contemporary folkster Mathew Gray and Knutsford’s Ash Hunter. That’s a hell of a bang for the buck that you never paid.
Fri 4 and Sun 6 Jul, Band on the Wall, 25 Swan St, M4 5JZ, Starts 6pm, FREE, www.bandonthewall.org
