Few British musicians over the past 30 years can cite a career as diverse as that of Jonny Greenwood. Cutting his teeth as the lead guitarist of Radiohead – as integral in shaping their sound and success as frontman Thom Yorke – he reemerged in the 2000s as a composer, producing scores for films such as The Master and There Will Be Blood. It’s his composition work over the past decade that makes up the show at the Albert Hall, the venue’s vaulted ceiling providing ideal foil for the doomy Oscars-fodder scratched into Greenwood’s manuscripts. As in his recent London shows, Jonny’s scores will be brought to life by the man himself and the London Contemporary Orchestra, an organisation founded to promote new classical music and provide for talented young musicians. In addition to Greenwood’s catalogue of established work and unseen materials, the LCO will be presenting works by Xenakis, Purcell, Messiaen and their composer-in-association Edmund Finnis. In all, this is a rare chance to see a true innovator at work. Just don’t turn up expecting him to play Creep. We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away for the show. To enter, send the answer to the questions below in an email to competitions at manchesterwire dot co dot uk with the subject line ‘Jonny Greenwood competition’. Be sure to include your name, age, Twitter handle and phone number.
