The city centre’s culture hub Cornerhouse is due to move its residence to HOME next year; part of the First Street North development that includes a centre for international contemporary art, theatre, films and books. To commemorate 30 years at its Oxford Road home, final exhibition Playtime will feature nine artists presenting playful and participatory work inspired by Cornerhouse’s structure and Jacques Tati’s 1967 comedy masterpiece Playtime. Among these will be Manchester-based artist Naomi Kashiwagi’s live performance, as inspired by the final scene in Tati’s Playtime. Partnering up with choreographer Benji Reed and Puffin Crossing Carousellers, the traffic junction outside Cornerhouse will be subject to a playful sequence performed by knowing participants and everyday pedestrians, and aims to show ‘how small, extraordinary moments and things can inspire joie de vivre in everyday life’, as Kashiwagi puts it.
