This weekend: Sounds from the Other City 2015 music festival

The festival of new music, art and more returns this May, taking in a huge range of venues (and between-venue spaces) up and down Salford’s Chapel Street. Phone boxes, art gallery, cafes or converted cotton mills are all part of the action and this year. As well as hosting acts like Cold Pumas, Jane Weaver, Zun Zun Egui, Sauna Youth, Menage a Trois, H A R T H E I M, Shit & Shine, Black Josh, D/R/U/G/S and Sara Lowes, there are some cool collaborations going on. Two special commissions include Ex Easter Island Head teaming up with the BBC Philharmonic to present a brand new composition at Vimto Gardens plus Red Deer Club and Sara Lowes’ ‘The Battle of Bexley Square’, a new imagining of the traditional folk song performed simultaneously by ten musicians, all taking place on the outside stage at Bexley Square. SFTOC is also expanding into a series of previously unused railway arches with two specially designed stages brought together by local label Sways Records and mayhem makers Bad Uncle. Collaborations are happening across the venues with promoters like Wot God Forgot & rock gurus Fat Out and offbeat experts, Comfortable on a Tightrope and Now Wave joining forces to co-host venues like the Kings Arms and Islington Mill. SFTOC’s after party is hosted by masters of the dark club arts, Deep Hedonia, who will ‘bring Japan’ to Salford. If you like the sound of this, check out a video of last year’s highlights.
