From running a successful chain of mobile repair shops, Richard “Nozinja” Mthetwa has spent the past ten years popularising the Shangaan electro empire; electronic, rapid-fire drumming and marimba beats that are played at a sometimes breakneck speed of 190 BPM fundamental to its accompaniment: the dancers. Back in Soweto where Nozinja first applied his business acumen to the Shangaan dance and made it known worldwide, fortnightly cut-throat auditions are taken where groups seemingly dance without bones and are able to dislocate joints at will, in order to tour with him. Dancing the right way is the most important feature for Nozinja, and quick movements coupled with true-to-heart enthusiasm are key. After releasing on Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon’s Records, Nozinja brings his dancers to Soup Kitchen to celebrate his new album on Warp. Witness a revolution in dance culture.
