Wandering the medium between his two practices, painting and photography, artist Rick Copsey presents Paintscapes; the latest in an ongoing collection that alludes to wild, sublime nature of the sea. In his most recent work, he uses oil paint as his prime medium, using macro photography to capture droplets of wet paint (around 3 millimetres in diameter), which results in the appearance of a seascape. Copsey’s Paintscapes are illusive; creating a visual mirage, akin to the mystic quality of the sea, shot up close, to give the impression of being seen from afar. His work has recently appeared in exhibitions in Romania, Moldova and Middlesbrough as well as in private collections in the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the USA. Developing from his previous series – Seascapes (2010-11) – Copsey further explores his integrated practices as both a photographer and a painter.
