Alight for New Mills Lantern Procession

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Manchester is surrounded by some of the country’s most picturesque natural landscapes. If you’re raring to get out of the city for some country air and long walks, the Derbyshire town of New Mills is as good place as any to start – and this Saturday, the annual New Mills lantern procession will be shining a light on some of the town’s dramatic vistas as the culmination of the two-week-long New Mills Festival. The route, illuminated by fire sculptures and hundreds of homemade lanterns, goes down into the deep gorge of the Torrs, near the convergence of the town’s two rivers, the Sett and the Goyt, and over the celebrated Millennium Walkway. As all good things should, the procession ends in a big fireworks display. And an added incentive? New Mills is on the edge of the Peak District, yet only 25 minutes on the train from Manchester Piccadilly.
