Bank holiday weekends that coincide with pay day can make us all a bit hysterical, so if you’re needing to reign things in a little, why not check out these great freebies that the city has to offer this weekend?

Nucleus Roots at Band on the Wall
So originally this Friday was supposed to see Black Uruhu’s Mykal Rose take to the stage, but unfortunately he’s had to cancel on us. Luckily, though, the good people of Band on the Wall have an ace up their sleeve and are throwing a free party in its place, with a live set from Nucleus Roots, special guests Ossie Gad (Natural Ites) and DJ Joey B. Definitely not a bad back up, as freebies go.

Soccerex Football Festival at Old Granada Studios
Now entering its second year, the Soccerex Football Festival returns this weekend, taking a 1600+ sqm venue and filling it with a triple threat tournament, where contestants will battle it out by dribbling, quick feet and technique for the Soccerex Skill Trophy, the UK Freestyle Football Championships, where football freestylers from across Britain will showcase their routines in a one-on-one battle, the Panna Cage, where opponents will go head to head in an octagonal cage with the aim of nutmegging their challenger, an interactive zone, youth empowerment workshops and demos, zorb football, local DJs, graffiti artists and entertainers. Oh, AND Louis Saha.

Music and Minecraft at Central Library with Guy Garvey (pictured)
Manchester Central Library throws open its doors this Sunday for an afternoon of free entertainment for the whole family, where local hero and internationally renowned Elbow frontman Guy Garvey will be broadcasting his BBC 6 Music radio show, Finest Hour, live on the day. He’ll be joined by Radiohead’s Phil Selway and New Order’s Stephen Morris, and Selway will present the Central Library with a special drumkit in memory of Radiohead’s drum technician Scott Johnson, who tragically died in a stage collapse incident. Elsewhere, you can also expect sing-along story sessions, songs, Minecraft mask-making, bunting workshops, musical instruments and more throughout the library.
