Last chance: Lisa Wilkens Show at PAPER Gallery

To coincide with the 35th anniversary of Manchester becoming a nuclear-free city, the German-born artist Lisa Wilkens presents her first solo exhibition The Shadows of an Unseen Power. It consists of highly detailed drawings, inspired by images relating to nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and radioactivity. Completing a degree in scientific illustration, followed by an MA in printmaking, Wilkens’ drawings in chinese ink combine scientific accuracy, creative experimentation, and striking political undertones. It is through her work, inspired by the Nuclear War protests that her activist parents took her to, that she has developed an understanding for the transformative power of images to effect direction and change; a type of subtle activism. Previously her work has been shown at The Saatchi Gallery, in New Contemporaries (the leading survey of graduate artists), at the SS1 space Sheffield, and the ICA in London. She was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011.
