The Time is Now: Pioneering women film season at HOME

The Time is Now, a season of films that celebrate women who bring about social change, is on now at HOME. Coming up this Thursday (22 Oct, 6.10pm, info) is a screening of the satirical drama Offside, which centres on Iran’s participation in the 2006 World Cup. Women are banned from attending matches, so a group of female footy fans dress as men to beat the system. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion about women in sport, and the rise in popularity of women’s football. Later in the month is Make More Noise! (Thu 29 Oct, 6.30pm, info), an evening of short silent films, including newsreels and anarchic comedies, that deal with women’s suffrage. This screening will feature a specially commissioned score performed live by Lillian Henley. The festival coincides with the release of Suffragette (pictured, info), a new movie starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Meryl Streep. The film is being shown four times a day at HOME until the end of the month.
