Homeless Film Festival screens Waste Land at The Whitworth + an art workshop

The Homeless Film Festival, a touring event which aims to tackle global destitution, comes the Whitworth gallery in November. For one night only there will be a screening of the acclaimed documentary, Waste Land, which centres on Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist. Muniz travels to Rio to investigate the largest landfill site in the world. Here, he meets a group of ‘catadores’ – people who earn a living from salvaging reusable waste – and collaborates with them. During the course of the film, they transform waste into contemporary artworks and present them for auction, as well as revealing much about their lives, hopes and dreams. The film was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars and is directed by Lucy Walker. Prior to the screening, there will be a workshop inspired by the film where designer Laura Jane Atkinson will collaborate with a local homelessness charity to create a one-off piece of art.
