John McCabe’s concept of a short, snappy collection of recitals arrives at The Bridgewater Hall in a concert called Joybox by name; Joyful by nature! The pick’n’mix selections include performances by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and features works by Stravinsky, Charles Ives, George Antheil and McCabe, with the highlight being the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s concerto, Erskine for Drum set and Orchestra, featuring the jazz sticksman and concerto namesake, Peter Erskine (pictured). John Storgårds will take the podium to lead the BBC Philharmonic through the programme, with Peter Erskine on drums. With a career spanning more than five decades, Erskine is widely recognised as one of the best jazz drummers of all time. He has appeared on over 600 albums and film scores, including fifty albums released under his own name or as co-leader and won two Grammy Awards. He has worked with everyone from Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kate Bush. Hailing from the same era as West Side Story composer, Leonard Bernstein, Erskine has a particular passion for film music, and this concert is a fitting part of BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s American Adventure season. These concerts are a homage to Bernstein and excuse to celebrate the diverse composers that Bernstein was influenced by. Students in particular are being encouraged to lift their heads from the books for this series – with prices discounted to just £3 per NUS card holder (more details available here: www.facebook.com/sonicmanchester). Before the concert, there’s a free session for ticket-holders with children too, called Journey Through Music. This offers a chance for children to meet the orchestra and find out more about the performance at 6.30pm. Click here for details of how to book.
