Whether you think that Nicolas Winding Refn is a maverick, genius or perplexing film-maker, he knows his film. Curating a season with HOME, Refn has selected six films for screening – including his most controversial film to date, the Bangkok-set Only God Forgives (20 Jul) which closes the season. It opens with Rainer Werner’s masterpiece, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (6 July) which nods towards Refn’s forthcoming horror, The Neon Demon, with human desire playing a pivotal role. The season also includes George Miller’s Mad Max (9 July). Recently gaining a reboot of sorts, Miller’s original sees Mel Gibson taking the iconic role of Max Rockatansky. Pete Walker’s Man of Violence (15 July) is an homage to the great American gangster films of Hollywood’s golden generation while Planet of the Vampires (16 July) has influenced contemporary sci-fi classics, such as Ridley Scott’s Alien.
