Deepest, darkest Saddleworth is set to become a wee bit brighter this November, as the quaint little mill town of Mossley is hosting a Festival of Light. The main attraction is a lantern parade, which will see four-metre-high animatronic animals lead an after dark, carnival-style procession. It will feature illuminated characters from Shakespeare’s The Tempest which have been given a Latin American twist. A display by local artists will use giant marionettes to depict a local woman throughout the many stages of her life. The parade will culminate with the switch on of the town’s Christmas lights in the market square, where there will be food and drinks. In anticipation of the festival, site-specific art works will be popping up throughout the town. Mossley can be reached by road via the A635, and on the 217 and 218 buses. There are trains from Manchester Victoria approximately every 30 minutes.
