Video Jam is an innovative series of film-based events, often including a live score. The next one takes place in early February at the Royal Northern College of Music. The film being Jammed in this case is Baraka, a critically-acclaimed documentary from 1992. It was directed by Ron Fricke, who was the cinematographer on the classic nature doc Koyaanisqatsi (1982). Shot over 14 months in 25 countries, Baraka has no voice over or narrative, but instead features a montage of natural events, human activities, and animal life. Six music artists were given a section of the film to compose for, and they will each perform their part, before relaying (hopefully seamlessly) to the next. Contributors include: electronica artist My Panda Shall Fly; Bahraini instrumentalists Flamingods; and singer/DJ Afrodeutsche. Two of the RNCM’s own composers will have their work performed by the college’s students. So, you’ll experience many different musical styles, including electronic, percussive, and contemporary classical.
