If you like your social activism on the gentler side, then the Imperial War Museum has the event for you. Taking place in March, ‘Mending Our Ways’ is a day of crafting, learning new skills, and discussion. The event is hosted by Sarah Corbett, the founder of Craftivist Collective, which uses crafts to help people engage in worthy causes. Sarah will guide attendees through the Lowry’s acclaimed exhibition ‘Fashion on the Ration: 1940s Street Style’. From this, you can discover how clothes have been used as a form of protest, and discuss the lessons learned from WWII and its regimen of thrift. Taking this notion of ‘make do and mend’ to heart, Sarah will teach you how to do your own visible mending as a form of wearable activism, to fight against modern disposable fashions and mass consumption. You can also learn how to stitch your own Heart on Sleeve craftivism badge dedicated to something you love.
