Before Westeros, there was West Yorkshire. In 2009 Channel 4 stole a march on the current golden age of high-end TV drama with the Red Riding Trilogy, adapted from David Peace’s quartet of crime thrillers. With a stellar cast including Sean Bean, Maxine Peake and Paddy Considine, the individual films – Red Riding 1974, 1980 and 1983 – represented such a jump in production values for British TV that they were released in cinemas worldwide. This special screening at the White Hotel sees all three films show one after the other at a unique event to kick-off their new Art of Crime / Crime of Art season. Red Riding screenwriter, Tony Grisoni, a frequent collaborator with Terry Gilliam, found a way to weave the labyrinthine plots of the cult novels into three coherent but distinct episodes of film noir, brutally evoking the darkest period in Yorkshire’s history. He will be present for an hour-long Q&A before the screenings. The five-hour film screening will be followed by a DJ set from Ninja Tune’s Funky Porcini.
