Explore the dark side of Anthony Burgess’s life and work in a new exhibition examining the Manchester author’s interest in the occult. Cartomancy: Anthony Burgess and the Tarot features previously unseen material from the archives of the Burgess Foundation. The author not only owned Tarot cards, he created a couple of packs himself (pictured) – even reading the cards at village fetes in the 1950s while wearing a false beard. This free exhibition includes Burgess’s own future as told through astrology, and you can see a manuscript of his unpublished short story Chance Would Be A Fine Thing. Cartomancy will run until July downstairs at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation – view it while the café is open during the day, or during evening events.

May – July 2017, International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Chorlton Mill, 3 Cambridge Street, Manchester M1 5BY. Tel: 0161 235 0776, Mon-Fri 10am-3pm, FREE. www.anthonyburgess.org
