Castlefield Gallery mixes ancient and modern as Manchester painter Lindsey Bull is joined by London art collective Plastique Fantastique for the contemporary art gallery’s summer show. Bull’s new mixed-media installation takes its cues from witchcraft journals, fashion magazines, ritual and religion; the ethereal characters in her paintings often pose alone in isolated woodlands. Plastique Fantastique mix comics and text as they explore the space between popular culture and the sacred – the ever-changing group’s new work takes inspiration from the image of the Hanged Man, the famous Tarot card depicting someone suspended upside-down from branches. Both Lindsey Bull and Plastique Fantastique also draw on the theme of twins and doubles, bringing out ideas of psychological connection and trickery. For the preview night of the exhibition (Thu 22 Jun, 6pm-8pm), the Fantastique artists will perform a kind of séance around the Hanged Man in an attempt to invoke a digital spirit, an angelic algorithm that connects the present with the past. The preview night is free to attend but because of the limited capacity of the exhibition space, it’s worth getting there early if you want to catch their pixel fairy. The exhibition runs through to the first week of August.
