Contemporary Six is an independent art gallery right in the city centre, opposite the Town Hall. Its newest exhibition, which begins in early March, is entitled Northern Lights and is a showcase of the work of Chris Cyprus. Born in Gorton, Cyprus was formerly a self-employed builder before becoming a self-taught artist. His paintings capture everyday life in nearby places such as Saddleworth, Holmfirth, and his hometown of Mossley. All the scenes are illuminated by the colours of twilight and the distinctive glow of sodium street lighting. He began this project in 2005, but a couple of years ago, it became a race against time because the government launched a new scheme to phase out these sodium lights and replace them more environmentally friendly LEDs. On the day of exhibition’s launch, the gallery will be selling 250 numbered and signed books based on the Northern Lights series.
