Fifth year: Manchester Histories Festival returns this month

Returning for its fifth edition in June is an event which celebrates the local area’s proud heritage, Manchester Histories Festival is a long-weekender featuring music, film, debate, and theatre – at venues across the city. The event aims to pull back the curtain on some of the most important and also some of the overlooked chapters of Greater Manchester’s past. Central to this year’s theme is the centenary of women’s suffrage, and 150 years of the TUC. Among the many events is ‘Soapbox’, which will take over All Saints Park, giving the public the chance to talk at a pop-up speakers’ corner. There’s also a full day of debate at Central Library, where a host of subjects will be put to the floor. ‘Not the Factory’, also at the Library, goes beyond the usual story of Manchester music. It explores the fringes of the underground music scene, and features discussions and performance.
