Celebrating its sixth year at venues across the city next week, is the Gothic Manchester Festival. Hosted by MMU, the five-day long event aims to rejoice in all things macabre with a wide variety of events including talks, concerts, and exhibitions. Just a few standouts are outlined here. Gothika, at the Great Northern Warehouse, is a drag show and ghoulish club night taking place under candlelight (book here). Inspired by Manchester’s gothic past, present and future, it’s hosted by drag artists Cheddar Gorgeous and Liquorice Black. Scoring Fear, at Chetham’s Stoller Hall, is an evening of classical music and horror film scores (Wed 1 Aug, book here) in which the BBC Philharmonic will perform music by composers whose work invokes suspense and terror, such as Bernard Herrmann and Dmitri Shostakovich. The novel ‘Frankenstein’ turns 200 this year, and to celebrate this bicentennial, writer Fiona Sampson will be presenting a talk at MMU called In Search of Mary Shelley (Thu 2 Aug, book here).
