Part of Asia Triennial Manchester 2018 in partnership with Castlefield Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery, and tying in with the former’s Subi exhibition, MCDC’s A Journey Home is the first UK solo show for Eunmi Kim, and explores Korean identity and art. An expert in the heritage of Korean ceramics, Kim moved to London ten years ago to work as a freelance ceramicist and she incorporates both eastern and western techniques in her practice. Inspired by the simple, earthy and unconstrained style of the traditional pottery of her homeland, Kim draws on her own experiences to add a personal, multicultural and contemporary vision to her work. This new collection of vases and jars is created from rustic Joseon Buncheong stoneware, and textured to reflect the unique cratered volcanic landscape of Jeju Island, where she grew up. Meticulously made by hand, each piece takes at least three weeks to complete. Breathtaking.
