Gudetama translates as ‘lazy egg’ in English. Like an egg, Gudetama has no gender, and is characterised by a totally ‘meh’ attitude. Despite a total lack of get up and go, Gudetama has been a massive hit around the world since being launched by Sanrio (creator of characters such as Hello Kitty) in 2013 – and Shoryu Ramen Japanese restaurant are paying homage to the eggy one with a new, limited edition set menu. Available from now until 21 October, the £22 set menu includes three courses, and a drink with limited edition Gudetama coaster. Dishes on offer include ramen topped with an authentic nitamago egg (decorated with with Gudetama’s face) alongside char siu barbecue pork belly, pumpkin croquette Shoryu Buns, mochi ice cream served in a Gudetama cup. Drinks include iced tea served on a coaster which can be taken home. Shoryu Ramen have also launched a new cocktail menu packed with Japanese ingredients. We particularly like the sound of Fuji Maple (pear vodka, apple juice, oolong tea and shochu), Tokyo Fall (Espresso coffee, rye whiskey, Cointreau, yuzu umeshu, homemade vanilla syrup and orange bitters) and Zen Grapefruit (Jinzu gin, fresh pink grapefruit and homemade rosemary syrup – all £10).
Shoryu Ramen x Gudetama menu available until Sun 21 Oct, 1 Piccadilly, Manchester M1 1RG. Tel: 020 3405 7550, www.shoryuramen.com
