The Rivals – great British pub food
Few restaurants manage to be British, classic and modern at the same time – but that’s exactly what head chef, Anna Fysh, has achieved with her outstanding menu at Royal Exchange Theatre’s The Rivals restaurant and bar. Co-owned by Goska and Jamie Langrish (former owners of the Parlour), actor, Rupert Hill (who co-owns Gullivers, The Eagle in Salford and The Castle Hotel among others), this wood-lined restaurant is a destination in itself. Porta Salford – Chapel Street’s new tapas restaurant & bar (pictured)
Chester-born small plates and tapas bar, Porta, has been serving up some of the best food in Altrincham for the past three years – and they’re one of the first restaurant to open on Salford’s Chapel Street. A stone’s throw from Deansgate,  the architectural details of this turn of the century bank have been delightfully preserved (parquet floors, brass locks). We recommend the giant house G&Ts and the baked Monte Enebro goats cheese with warm, local honey.

Mac Daddies – cheesy treats from the British Street Food finalists
Vegan mac’n’cheese? You bet. Enjoy this dairy-free treat, the regular cheesy stuff, and much more besides at this newcomer in the Manchester Arnadale.

Hip Hop Chip Shop – funky fish and chips in Ancoats
If you need evidence that this was the year of street food going mainstream, look no further than Mac Daddies. But taking things one step further, with their very own independent venue in Ancoats, are fish and chip merchants extraordinaire, the hip hop chip shop. Expect brilliant chippie tea inspired grub: jerk battered fish with scotch bonnet pickles and battered plantain, battered vegan sausage with chunky, skin-on chips and minty mushy peas, proper pies, great fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce – and more.
Saw Mill Court, 44 Blossom Street, Manchester M4 6BF. Tel: 07855 053271 www.thehiphopchipshop.com

Tre Ciccio – simply great Italian pizza and roast chicken
Italian restaurant Tre Ciccio opened in Altrincham in 2016. They launched a second branch in Bramhall in 2018 and have a third planned for Ramsbottom in 2019. The menu is inspired by a family run trattoria near Salerno, Campani and the focus is neapolitan style pizza, roast chicken and grilled meats. Examples include whole, Goosnargh roast chicken with potatoes, roasted red peppers and sun-dried tomato pesto to share, grilled traditional fennel sausages and ‘Agnello Scottaditto’ (translated as ‘Burning fingers’) which is lamb cutlets with roasted squash and mint gremolata. See you there.
