Now open: Manchester Jewish Museum comes to Central Library

Somewhat sadly, Manchester Jewish Museum in Cheetham Hill is set to close for two years. However, it’s for a good reason: The creation of a swanky Lottery-funded extension. And while the building work is taking place, the Museum will transfer its collections to Central Library, creating an interactive pop-up venue. This opens in mid-July, and you’ll find it on the lower ground floor, near the Children’s Section. Museum objects, historic photographs, and recordings will be on display to help tell the story of Jewish Manchester. An ‘Object Selection Machine’, designed by artist Kirsty Harris, will enable visitors to interact with and explore the collection. Designed for school visits, a ‘Synagogue in a Box’ will let children learn about the Jewish faith, and use craft materials to turn the space into their own bespoke place of worship. Whilst based at the library, the museum will also be running a community outreach programme: bringing food, music, and storytelling activities to civic venues across the region.
