Subliminal Impulse, a new, two-day festival comes to Manchester this summer, exploring the influence and legacy of electronic music. Taking over the Northern Quarter on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 July, the festival brings together artists from across the globe to explore “the notion of electronic music” in the heart of Manchester, showcasing new and emerging talent, as well as hosting in-depth discussion panels involving key figures. We’ve picked out 5 acts to look out for across the two days, all free to attend.
Spectral Bazaar | Fri 5 Jul | Night & Day Café | 2pm
Local duo Spectral Bazaar’s appearance at Subliminal Impulse comes alongside the release of their debut album The Planets. Paying homage to 100 years of Gustav Holst’s seven-movement orchestral suite The Planets, their music is an electronic interpretation of Holst’s original notes.
J Frisco | Sat 6 Jul | AATMA | 7:30pm
This award-winning (Jazz North Introduces 2017) avant-garde jazz trio create improvised genre-blending soundscapes combined with noise drawn from emotion, political, and gender issues. Featuring Lara Jones on soprano saxophone, Megan Roe on electric guitar and Jemma Freese on keyboards and vocals, they have recently supported the likes of Courtney Pine, Portico Quartet, Laura Jurd, Roller Trio, Matthew Bourne, and Elliott Galvin.

Graham ‘Dids’ Dowdall – AKA – Gagarin crafts instrumental electronica that is both atmospheric and melodic, blending field recordings, gorgeous synth melodies and pounding abstract beats to create a distinctive sonic signature.
243 Ida | Sat 6 Jul | Night & Day Café | 9.30pm
Local electro-pop duo 243 Ida possess a sound drawing influence from a mix of indie and electronica, combing the two into a neat danceable package. The pair, who consist of producer Emma Williams-Daly and vocalist Lennie Butler, have recently seen off the release of EP Lioness and I, out 27 May 2019.
Polypores | Sat 6 Jul | Apotheca | 2pm
Self-described as “cosmic sleep music”, Polypores have seen their work release on respected independent labels Polytechnic Youth, KiNETiK Records, Concréte Tapes, and A Year In The Country.
