With October rolling in and Halloween around the corner there are some unique, spooky film treats to be had in Manchester, as well as a variety of other film events to suit every taste this Autumn in the city. Let’s take a look…
This course will explore the array of different representations and roles of women in film comedy since the 1930s and will look into the subversion of the patriarchy through their voices, bodies and narratives. The course will also focus on a range of women in the film industry from Katherine Hepburn and Mindy Kaling to Alice Guy-Blache and Gurinda Chadha. It is beginners’ level, runs for eight weeks and includes two course screenings.
This event will feature a screening of Jordan Peele’s run away hit and psychological thriller Get Out with an introduction from Dr. Linnie Blake and Dr. Sarah Llott. They will present their forthcoming, soon-to-be published research on the film’s intriguing discourses with emphasis on Gothic Realism, socio-politics, the Female Gothic, racism and black resistance.
Wilderland is a new festival which will showcase spectacular stories and short films about the natural world in all its astounding glory. It features a collection of innovative and adventurous short films from around the world giving insight into some wonderful wildlife including humpback whales and orangutans.
For the Love of Horror is a fan convention mixed with a scare attraction. It features actor Q&As with talent such as Kiefer Sutherland (24, The Lost Boys), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, Speed 2) and Tobin Bell (the Saw films), a live concert, horror attractions, arcades and gaming, cosplay competitions, merchandise, a funfair, prosthetic makeup demos, set builds, live art and much more.
The Village Screen are back this Halloween transforming the atmospheric, Edwardian Victoria Baths into a spooky pop-up cinema with two cult favourites; The Conjuring (31 Oct) and Beetlejuice (1 Nov). As always, the Village Screen will feature a pop-up bar with themed cocktails and a multitude of street food traders before the film along with a DJ set to provide a fun-filled night with a party atmosphere. Visitors can choose to sit on deckchairs in the main Gala Pool or wooden seating on the Balcony Level. And just a drive outside of Manchester worth mentioning will be The Village Screen’s additional unique screenings in Peak Cavern where they transform the ambient natural wonder of a cave into an awesome, ghostly cinema. There they will be screening The Conjuring, Poltergeist and Ghostbusters.
The Bottomless Singing Cinema offers its audiences a unique sing-a-long experience to classic musicals. Included in the price are bottomless drinks during the film (including gin, vodka, wine, rum and beers) bottomless popcorn and waiter service. At this event see two nostalgic musicals back to back with Baz Luhrmann’s juke-box musical Moulin Rouge and Rob Marshall’s 1920s, jazz-infused crime musical Chicago.
Gogo Penguin returns to Manchester to perform live their original score for Godfrey Reggio’s cinematic masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi at the Royal Northern College of Music. The classic will be infused with emotive music by GoGo Penguin offering a new and updated interpretation whilst still exploring the profound themes of the cult film. The live music will bring a new dimension to the film offering what is sure to be a unique audiovisual experience.
FilmFear, curated in partnership with FilmFour, returns to HOME for a Halloween line-up full of dark, eerie and unsettling fun. There will be sneak previews, Q&As with filmmakers and classic films including the preview of Robert Eggers’ latest anticipated feature The Lighthouse, the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep and a family screening of nostalgic Halloween favourite The Witches and much more. Pop-up Puppet Cinema is an unusual cinematic experience mixing cheeky puppets with much loved cult Hollywood films and humour. This event will feature a special Halloween double bill spoofing horror classics Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing.

Begin the Halloween season early with Grimmfest 2019, an independent horror and genre film festival that showcases work from new and established filmmakers from around the globe. The festival will be packed with a programme of the best in horror, sci-fi, extreme and cult cinema and this year it also includes a strong line-up of female directed and narrative-led films. There will also be a whole host of exclusive premieres, Q&A’s, top talent signing opportunities and short film programmes.
