This Tuesday, Sand Bar sees the launch of the annual Gothic Festival in Manchester, apt as the nights begin to draw in and the temperature drops to grant an eerie feeling to the city. To coincide with the beginning of the festival, Manchester Gothic Arts Group launch their exhibition, Gothic Times, that will be displayed at Sand Bar for the duration of the festival. Exploring gothic art and ideas throughout the ages, the exhibition will touch on what gothic has meant in the past, and what it will mean in the future as spirits from the gothic world take you on a journey through the darker side.
In the next adults only after-hours event, the Science & Industry Museum will be celebrating 150 years since the publication of the periodic table with a night focussed on all things chemistry. A far cry from being stopped from playing with bunsen burners in year 11, Chemistry: Late will feature periodic table top trumps, a chemical bingo game, rice krispies pale ale as well as the BBC’s Dr Kirsty Turner explaining the secrets of the Victorian photoflash. Tickets are free but advance booking is recommended.
Taco Bell think they know what it takes to attract Freshers to their Deansgate branch, and that’s late night opening and Silent Disco dancing. The headphone wearing club night will take over the fast food chain for one night this Wednesday to welcome the new students to Manchester. The top floor of the restaurant will be the place for students and locals alike to mingle in silence as the provided headphones pump out one of two stations from the live DJ. There will also be a ‘Taco Tuesday’ deal for every attendee which includes a free taco and a free beer. If you’re extra hungry, the full menu will be available until 3am when they boot you out. Advance tickets are sold out, but walk-ups will be available.

With the laudable aim of promoting comedy with no bigotry, Blizzard Comedy returns for their last show until December this Mon (Sep 30) at Gullivers. Coincidentally hosted at the same time free speech martyrs Comedy Unleashed are in town for the Conservative Party Conference, Blizzard will be hosting their night of hilarious and safe space comedy. If you’re wary of nights with audience participation, you’ll be a fan of their sticker system for people who actively agree to it otherwise they’ll be left alone. It’s not just about safe spaces, it’s also about the funny which will be brought by headliner and ‘natural comic’ Steffan Alun alongside an array of supporting talent.
