There’s plenty of food and drink news to get your teeth into around Manchester this week. Not least of all is the city being abuzz with the news that it has finally landed a Michelin star in the much lauded Mana. Elsewhere there’s sad news that the much loved Umezushi is shutting its doors in a couple of weeks, whilst Brewdog announces its new site off Market Street and Manchester restaurants celebrate some national food weeks.
In sad news, one of Manchester’s most loved restaurants announced last week that its doors were to close. Umezushi, the hidden away sushi restaurant at the back of the Manchester Arena, will be shutting its doors for good on Oct 20 after 7 years in its Mirabel Street location. The restaurant’s parting message stated that they hoped to be popping up again in the near future so fingers are crossed it’s not long away.
Having previously announced that they were leaving their Peter Street location as a hotel was being built on the site, Brewdog have revealed where they intend to open up next. The former Enzo pizza restaurant on Fountain Street will be the next spot for the wildly successful craft brewer who will be hoping to last a bit longer than the last occupants who were gone in just over a year.
Much has been made of the fact that Victoria Station’s revamp didn’t see it embrace local and independent businesses within its concourse, with the lack of a decent pub one of the main concerns. The latest announcement from the folks behind Piccadilly Tap has changed all that, as they’ll be heading to the station for what we assume will be called the Victoria Tap. The planning permission suggests there will be outside seating at a Todd Street location, and will go before a planning committee after Oct 18.
The late-night pizza and beer bar Crazy Pedro’s has teamed up with London brewer Camden to create a new special house brew. Labelling itself as the ultimate party beer, Pedro’s Party Brew, the beer will be available from Oct 11 at both of their Manchester sites as well as their Liverpool location. If you’re first in line for a bottle, the first 50 people to buy one will get a free limited edition t-shirt to celebrate the launch.
Mamuicium Restaurant & Bar, the new spot in Hotel Indigo, has launched a new cocktail hour during the week. From 4-7pm Mon to Fri classic hand-crafted cocktails will be available for £7.95 or £10 for two. Choose from Negronis, Kir Royales, and plenty more of classic options. If you prefer other tipples, G&Ts are also 2 for £10 whilst beers are 2 for £6.
If you can sense the sea salt in the air and the ocean lapping at the shore, that’ll be because National Seafood Week has started. The new week-long nationwide celebration of all things fishy and wet aims to promote more eating of seafood and sees Manchester restaurants also promote their fishy ways. 20 Stories has seen the addition of Colchester rock oysters to the menu for the week in recognition though it is unfortunate timing considering the aforementioned loss of sushi restaurant Umezushi.
Another national food celebration sees Bundobust take a tongue-in-cheek approach to National Curry Week. For three weeks the vegetarian street food restaurant will nod to the Anglo-Indian curry houses with their Curry House Classics. Launching on Mon (Oct 7) the menu features staples from around the British Isles including vindaloo and poppadoms – if you go for the combo you get all the curry house staples with a bhaji thrown in. Available until Sun 27 Oct.
