Elizabeth I and her half-sister Mary Queen of Scots are two of the most enduring British historical figures to be depicted on film, with countless actresses depicting them over the years. In this discussion event, PhD students Joseph Massey and Aidan Norrie will be talking about the legacy of these two royals, using film clips and historical sources to discuss their lives, politics and supposed rivalry.
On Thursday evening, you can catch this fascinating talk from poet and author Rosie Garland, who will be reading from her new novel. Garland is the inaugural writer in residence at The John Rylands Library, and her new work takes place in the library during the 1980s – drawing inspiration both from the building’s imposing gothic form, as well as her own experiences in Manchester’s post-punk scene at the time. This event includes a Q&A and an opportunity to get work signed.

Withington record store Wilderness hosts this free record listening party on Tuesday evening, where museos of all stripes are invited to appreciate and discuss two very different records. For this instalment, they’ll be covering the recently-released Schlagenheim from London-based experimental group Black Midi, alongside electonic pioneers Suicide’s 1977 self-titled debut album. Musical production experts will also be on hand to introduce these records, as well as answer specific questions about how they were made and the context surrounding them.
