A new comedy night, an old favourite and one for the mothers make up our picks of the best stand-up in the city this week.

XS Malarkey with Jenny Collier | Tue 22 Oct | 7pm | From £3

Welsh comic Jenny Collier is headlining XS for the first time this week, a writer on the News Quiz and a comic who has gigged worldwide, Collier is always a treat and this will be no different. Also on the bill is a ‘super secret special guest’, which with XS’s rolodex of famous names is sure to be super special indeed. Even if this fabled mystery person isn’t, there’s Kathryn Mather, Sam Avery and Toby Hadoke to make sure it’s still a smasher.

OH Comedy Night with Adam Rowe | Wed 23 Oct | 7pm | £12 (£17 with arrival drink)

As a new comedy night starting in the city you have to start strong and the Oast House’s new venture is doing exactly that with four of the finest North West male comedians around. Hosted by Dan Nightingale, and featuring viral superstar Adam Rowe as headliner they also welcome Freddy Quinne and Adam Staunton as support. As a starting point it’ll take some beating and we can’t wait to see what their sophomore effort is like.

Mums the Word at The Edge | Fri 25 Oct | 1pm | £10/8

After appearing in front of rowdy stag and hen dos every weekend, circuit comics must be more than relieved to be performing to literal babies, where the heckles are involuntary and arguably more polite than the older gentlemen they might encounter in the clubs. Katie Mulgrew’s Mums the Word (although anyone looking after a baby is more than welcome at the show) is a relaxed and friendly event where mums (and others) can get out and watch some great stand-up. This will be the one gig you’ll go to where there’s a maximum age limit as the acts will be performing their regular sets (swears and all) and so there’s a strictly non baby over 18 months policy.
