There’s no sign of Manchester’s restaurant scene slowing down as we have news of no less than seven different openings heading for the city. There’s pop-ups in Peru Perdu replacing El Camino at The Cotton Factory, French macaron makers Lauderee heading to Selfridges and Cubanos purveyors Finca heading to the Northern Quarter. More permanent offerings can be found from Foundation Coffee Shop, Doner Haus and Northern Soul whilst Eat New York have closed but promise to rise again. There’s also national recognition for a Bolton curry house. That should be enough to keep food and drink lovers satisfied for now.
Lever Street’s Foundation Coffee Shop is to open its third location in Manchester as it adds to its Northern Quarter and Whitworth Street spots. Foundation Coffee Portland will open up on 11 Portland Street opposite Piccadilly Gardens bus station. The coffee shop, owned by local design company No Chintz, aims to be a brighter and breezier location than its sister locations as it attempts to nestle in alongside some of Portland Street’s more rough and ready neighbours when it opens this winter. Opens December.
Manchester is set to increase its posh kebab numbers in the next few weeks as Doner Haus opens in the city. As previously reported the kebab house is taking over the location in Corn Exchange left vacant by Byron Burgers. The huge new site will be home to 180 covers to tuck into kebabs starting from £7.70 and will feature classic options as well as kebabs for vegans and veggies. This is the second restaurant from the Scottish kebab purveyors following their one in Glasgow.
For Francophiles worried about access to their favourite macaroons following Brexit, Selfridges are on hand with their Lauderee pop-up in their Manchester store. The first ever northern outpost for the much romanticised dessert maker opened on Fri 18 Oct and features a cafe as well as takeaway boxes featuring all of the Parisian favourites’ classic flavours.
Following a successful pop-up last year in Spinningfields, Finca is to pop-up in Manchester once again as it takes over the kitchen at Northern Monk on Tariff Street. The rotating kitchen takeovers in the Leeds brewery’s Manchester bar have seen a wide variety of cuisines to satisfy beer lovers and next up is Cuban delights from the Million Pound Menu stars. For a month from Tue 5 Nov, Finca will be serving Cubanos, the traditional Cuban pork sandwiches, as well as a host of new menu choices including vegetarian options and a future beer tasting event. The kitchen will be open 7 days a week from 12-9pm.
Greater Manchester can lay claim to being the home of another food award after Bolton curry house, Hot Chilli, scooped the Champion of Champions award at the Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards. The restaurant has been open for nearly 10 years after debuting in 2011 and came top of the awards after a survey of over 350,000 customers was whittled down by a judging panel.
Piccadilly Gardens is gaining a reputation for itself as one of the best cheap and quick places to grab a bite in the city centre and their latest addition is sure to grow that. Chorlton and Hebden Bridge’s much loved Tibetan Kitchen has opened up serving their vegetarian dishes including classics like chickpea and spinach curry and vegetable momos. Serving every day, the markets are open from Wednesday to Sunday, those of an eco friendly bent can bring their own tubs for a free momo.
Manchester has clearly taken to cheese toasties as Northern Soul has opened the doors of its brand new full sit down restaurant. Located on Tib Street next to North Tea Power, the fried sandwich makers have taken over the old Simple site and have more than just toasties on offer. With a new menu featuring breakfast as well as a larger selection of dinner plates, the licensed restaurant also has a full booze offering and a nod to its cheesy heritage with cheese grater lampshades.
In less positive Northern Quarter sandwich news, bagel shop Eat New York has closed its doors. However, the folks behind the restaurant have said that this won’t be the last you’ve heard from them as they prepare to reopen on Oldham Street with a revised concept. It appears there will be a ground floor restaurant and bar with a cinema showing films above. Let’s hope this one lasts a bit longer.
