Brother-sister collaborators Emmanuel Jal & Nyaruach bring their live show to Soup Kitchen this November. The siblings, who have joined forces on Emmanuel Jal’s sixth record, NAATH, say of their home country: “South Sudan is still suffering from years of war and oppression, we feel it is our cultural responsibility to bring out the music and voices from our country.” NAATH is a wonderfully rich record of afrobeat jams, folklore explorations, and upbeat dance tunes, with twangy guitar and African percussion. Jal — an actor and activist, as well as a musician — has had a prolific decade in rap music, garnering acclaim for his powerful evocations of the war-torn conditions in the Sudanese region on records such as Warchild (2008) and The Key (2014). The collaboration with Nyaruach, herself a spokesperson for women’s rights and education, serves as a vibrant celebration of the culture of their home country, and this performance at Soup Kitchen promises to be a powerful and inspiring event.
