A new exhibition at the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre is one of our picks of free things to do in Manchester this weekend.
Head out to Cheshire this weekend, and you can catch the opening of a new exhibition at the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. Shared Sky draws from work by Aboriginal and South African artists, who’ve taken inspiration from the night’s sky and historical interpretations of the constellations. Family-friendly arts and crafts workshops will also be run throughout the day. The exhibition runs until Sunday 5 January.
Oxford Road container space Hatch hosts its final terrace party of the year on Saturday night. This weekend, they’re inviting multicultural music collective and Night & Day residents Me Gusta to DJ under the Mancunian way. Expect a blend of European, Middle-Eastern and Latin music at this free party. Wrap up warm though – the beats may be hot, but it’s cold outside.
Something a little different from the usual festive celebrations this Sunday, as Chorlton Green hosts this Winter Solstice event. It’s been organised by the team behind the successful Beech Road Summer solstice, six months ago. The afternoon and evening of Pagan ritual includes live music and performance art.

Levy market hosts its final market event of the year in Levenshulme Station car park, and as you might expect for the weekend before Christmas – it’s going to be a real festive treat. Alongside the usual selection of craft food stalls and local makers, there will also be live performances from SHE Choir and kora wiz John Hincock. It’s free to attend the market, but the organisers are soliciting donations for local homeless charity Mustard Tree.
