With the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, thoughts are quickly turning to the best ways to ensure a memorable experience for the loved one in your life. However that oh-so-special evening doesn’t necessarily have to involve fine dining in one of Manchester’s swankiest restaurants – there’s a wide variety of left-field fun to be found around the city. Here’s our picks of some of the best alternative date night spots for Valentine’s Day 2020…
Located at the end of King Street, Flight Club transforms the age-old game of darts into a new and social experience. With their kitsch interiors and fully stocked bar, you can guarantee a memorable evening with a game of darts for just the two of you – or even a larger group. Bookings are available from £22.50 with each session lasting roughly around 90 minutes. Food and drinks can be pre-booked and served during playtime – and there’s even an end-of-game photo opportunity allowing you capture your special night in all its instagrammable glory.
Over at First Street, Junkyard Golf offers a vibrant date night option with balls, clubs and a few neon cocktails thrown in for good measure. This rough-and-ready-themed crazy golf course is created from entirely pre-owned items, random, long-forgotten tat and repurposed junk and boasts three nine-hole golf courses that are perfect for finding out fast if your date has a competitive streak. Food and drink are available while you play and bookings are available from just £9.50.
When it comes to date nights, you can’t beat a good old fashion trip to the cinema – and at Cultureplex’s Mini Cini, you can guarantee a special experience free from any noisy multiplex crowds. As one of Manchester’s newest boutique cinemas, this cosy space offers just 36 seats and screens a wide selection of new release indie gems, mainstream popcorn movies and even a few stone cold classics that are hard to find on the big screen. What’s more, tickets are available from just £8. Learn more about Cultureplex’s events throughout February here.

If your special someone is more than a little keen on American sports, then it might be worth booking a trip to Base MCR this Valentine’s Day. Located under a railway arch on Milliow Street just behind Victoria Train Station, this hands-on sports bar gives you the opportunity to swing away in one of their three baseball batting cages. Bookings for a half hour slot for two people are available from £30 with bats and helmets included. The venue even has a bar, food and a giant screen offering extra-competitive visitors the chance to play retro video games.
