With Oscar season well and truly upon us, the Mini Cini at Cultureplex has a truly fantastic lineup of films this February. Featuring past winners spanning decades as well as favourites for this year, there’s loads to choose from in their ever-diverse and exciting programme, many of which you don’t often get the chance to see on the big screen. Here are our top picks for this month.

Spotlight | Mon 3 Feb | 7pm | From £5

This 2016 Oscar winner follows a team of Boston Globe journalists as they uncover an insidious web of systemic child sex abuse in their town within the Roman Catholic church. With a fantastic ensemble cast including Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton, this one will have you on the edge of your seat as the journalists grapple with institutional barriers as well as personal investments in the case.

Birdman | Tue 4 Feb | 7pm | From £5

Best Picture winner at the Oscars in 2015, this American black comedy-drama is about a Hollywood actor known for playing a superhero in the 90s desperately trying to alter his public image to that of a ‘serious’ actor. This is a notable film for many reasons, but perhaps most impressive visually is the camerawork, as the film appears to be filmed in one single shot – definitely worth seeing this one on the big screen.

Make A Scene Film Club Presents: All About Eve | Fri 7 Feb | 8pm | From £5

Based on the 1946 short story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, Bette Davis stars as the ageing Margo Channing, a famous Broadway star. Eve Harrington (portrayed by Anne Baxter) is a young fan who befriends Margo, but tensions quickly grow as Margo starts to feel threatened by the younger girl. It’s the only film to ever receive four female acting nominations at the Oscars.

Parasite | From 14 Feb | Various Times | From £5

This South Korean dark comedy has received sensational acclaim since becoming the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or last May. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also directed Snowpiercer, the film follows members of a poor household attempting to pose as highly qualified individuals in order to get hired by a much wealthier family.

The Lost Boys | Sat 29 Feb | 6pm | From £5

This 1987 comedy-horror sees two brothers move to a beach town in California where they unexpectedly encounter a gang of young vampires – the Lost Boys themselves (named after J. M Barrie’s Lost Boys in Peter Pan, as they too never grow up). With 80s movie stalwart Kiefer Sutherland as leader of the gang of vampires, this is the perfect chance to catch a cult classic on the big screen!
