Power-folk trio The Trials Of Cato headline The Castle this week. Winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Album last year – the rise of the band has been remarkable. Hailing from North Wales and Yorkshire, they utilise various instruments including mandolin, Irish bouzouki and banjo to create a traditional sound with a modern twist.
As part of their UK Tour, Alcest grace the stage at Gorilla. The French post-metal band, who are labelled as pioneers of the ‘blackgaze’ sound, began making music back in 2000. They’ve since released several albums – including their most recent creation Spiritual Instinct, which is perhaps their darkest record yet.
After first coming to the public’s attention with her Youtube channel, English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin’s success has been phenomenal. With her brand of indie folk crossed with synth pop – Aplin releases her third album this year Dear Happy with a UK Tour which hits Manchester Academy 2 at the weekend.
Ex-Vida frontman Jamie Pollock heads to Manchester on his UK tour this week with a headline gig at YES. The Scottish singer-songwriter brings his infectious indie sound, distinct vocals and emotive lyrics as showcased in recent release These Times. Jamie is supported by local bands Rolla, The Perps and Suave Martyrs.
Liverpool’s Little Triggers headline an evening of music over at Salford’s Eagle Inn. Still an emerging band, this exciting two piece offer rock’n’roll sounds. They will be joined on the bill by Leeds indie rock outfit The Common View and Manchester’s Myster – an indie four-piece promising something a bit different. That’s three bands for under a tenner – don’t miss it!
