In one of the year’s most unlikely comebacks, Harmony Korine, wunderkind of 1990s art house cinema, directs a likely crossover hit starring Disney princess Selena Gomez, Oscar-nominated heartthrob James Franco and rapper Gucci Mane in a debauched comedy which may even attract a few Nuts readers to Cornerhouse. After writing the screenplay for Larry Clark’s Kids as a teenager and directing Gummo in 1997, Korine was hailed by Werner Herzog as the “last footsoldier of independent cinema”. With music by love-him-or-hate-him dubstep megastar Skrillex and Drive’s Cliff Martinez, Spring Breakers is a lurid tale of the annual drink and drug-addled migration of American students to Florida. It has already raised feminist hackles in the US and at the Guardian and faced charges of exploitation of its young female cast, who undertake a tour of Miami’s seedy underbelly with Franco’s Dirty South playa.
