Lockdown 3 seems to have pushed Manchester’s chefs to embrace novelty takeaway territory, with burgers and pizzas a new tonic to the gourmet DIY kits of 2020. Some well-known operators are jumping on the trend, from Viet Shack’s new Arndale spot Dunkin’ Burgers (where, as the name suggests, every burger comes with a free pot of gravy) to The Koffee Pot’s transformation into pop up burger bar DD’s. Even Simon Martin, the chef patron of Manchester’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, is getting in on the action. Keep reading to discover the new takeaways you need to try this week…
Technically not a newcomer, but after the Smiths-themed Indian began trending on Twitter last week, we thought it deserved an honorary mention for the puns alone. With dishes such as Girlfriend in a Korma and Heaven Knows I’m Masala now, you can understand why. Located inside Retro Bar on Sackville Street, everything on the menu is vegan – from curries to Indian pies.
Detroit style pizza from the team behind Trof, Gorilla and Albert Hall, Ramona has been in the works for over a year. Just like at Failsworth’s Corner Slice and fellow newcomer Four Side Vegan Pizza, Ramona is serving up pies in the rectangular deep-dish Detroit-style, topped with brick cheese with tomato sauce layered on top of the other toppings.
Possibly the only vegan burger spot we can think of to boast a thriving streetwear arm, Liverpool’s Frost Burgers have just landed in Manchester with a Deliveroo exclusive. All plant-based, their stacked burger range has even got meat eaters salivating. Perfect for veganuary.
From the team at Brewski, American Pies promises to fulfil all of our cheese pull dreams at once. Due to launch any day now, you can look forward to deep-fried calzones, cheesy garlic knots and seriously stuffed Chicago deep-dish pizzas – something Manchester’s food scene has been sorely missing until now.

Whilst “I went to a Michelin star restaurant, and all I got was this takeaway burger” might be the most 2021 statement ever, it’s safe to say these are not your standard burgers. Think house-smoked shin, brisket and rump patties in a potato and brown butter bun, topped with a Cloudwater beer-infused American cheese mix, koji and dill mayo, lettuce and green onion paste. There are also only 100 available a day, so don’t hang about.
