Head down to Chorlton’s indie theatre, The Edge, for a private viewing of the art exhibition ‘Apricity’. Formed as a response to the difficult pandemic winter of 2020/21, the exhibition will show a series of pictures with no real intentions in mind other than to escape from the seemingly relentless bad news.
The work is an ode to the simple pleasure of creating and mark making, be it with a brush or a pencil, charcoal or pastels. Artist, Gary Steer, has created a series of incredible pictures that are deliberately not so political in nature and, instead, more light-hearted and romantic. Steer has commented that “the body of work in most basic terms points toward me looking for light and colour in dismal times”.
Venture to the stunning Victoria Baths for a mid-week night of music, spoken word, drag, dance, comedy and much more. The sober event for the queer community and their supporters will begin at 5pm where you can have a tour of the building, followed by a Queer Family Tea homemade meal in the cafe and a cabaret at 7.30pm in the old swimming pool.
As a community group, Queer Family Tea appreciate donations however they are not expected.
As part of its ‘Beyond London’ series of outreach events, Poetry London will be launching its 100th issue in the UK’s major poetry libraries, with Manchester Metropolitan University playing a key host in the festivities.
There will be a special display of archival editions of Poetry London and the poets they’ve featured at Manchester Met, along with readings from poet & Bloomsbury editor Kayo Chingonyi, and Poetry London’s competition judge, Malika Booker.
Two poetry events in one week – you’re spoilt for choice!
This one is a Young Identity curated event of poetry and readings from material gathered from workshops with community groups based in Moss Side. Expect great poetry performances and spoken word, alongside an interactive element where the audience can join in and create their own protest poetry.
Following the poetry comes ‘I Predict a Riot’—a two-part documentary film screening in partnership with Northwest Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University. Throughout the afternoon there will also be a book display, archive handling and dedicated space for conversation and idea sharing.
