Chapeltown Picture House reveals Halloween horror screening lineup

GRUB’S resident cinema space, Chapletown Picture House has unveiled a stellar lineup of horror movie screenings for Halloween.

From 70s cult classics to modern twists on the genre, there’s a little something for all audiences.

Along with the films, they’ll be serving a series of spooky drinks, including a Witches Spritz and a trilogy of Evil Dead beers à la Rivington Brew Co and Chain House Brewing Co.

Kicking off the series of spooky films is The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue (1974) tonight (Oct 28) at 7pm.

The synopsis goes a little something like this: George and Edna are out driving in the English countryside, on their way to visit Edna’s sister, when they run into some awful trouble with a murderous zombie. It seems that experiments with a new pesticide on local farmland have had the unfortunate effect of awakening the dead and turning them into ravenous, blood-hungry cannibals. George and Edna try to raise the alarm about the impending danger, but will the authorities believe such an unusual story? Tickets from £5 and also now include a free pumpkin carving session pre-movie.

Coming tomorrow (Oct 29) at 7pm is an unadulterated classic in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with bottomless sing-a-long. Part extravagant musical, part horror film, the movie details the travails of a squeaky clean couple stranded at a creepy castle where the inhabitants sing and dance through a bacchanalian romp of murder, bisexuality and cannibalism. It doesn’t stop there either, a film-frenzy weekend aptly titled Nightmare on Rad Street kicks off this Sat 30 Oct for an afternoon film festival of 80’s hair metal horrors that will see you through the devils night into the twilight of Halloween itself!

Four classics from the era of big shocks and bigger hair, covering all stripes of the spooktacular spectrum, it promises to be an evening of incredible shocks and thrills! Starting with a screening of Evil Dead 2 at 4.30pm then The Blob at 6.30pm, Fright Night at 8.20pm and ending with the banger that is Night of the Demons at 10.20pm – they’ve got you covered for all your 80s horror movie dreams. Tickets start from £5.50.

The big day will see a showing of Dawn of the Dead: Theatrical Cut (1978) starting at 3pm: Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. The second in director Romero’s brain munching ‘Dead’ saga and an unparalleled example of satirical horror spill forth onto the screen once more, courtesy of a new 4K remaster, to stagger amid the cinema aisles and malls of lawless 70’s America. Not ready to say goodbye to spooky season so soon? Chapletown are showing a family-friendly flick, Coco (2017), next Tue 2 Nov at 7pm: The animated adventure film directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina follows Miguel, a 12-year-old aspiring musician desperate to become a star like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, Mexico’s most famous music and film star. Despite being banned from playing music by his family, Miguel sets off on an epic adventure to the Land of the Dead with his dog Dante and trickster Hector in a bid to find Ernesto and unlock the secrets behind his mysterious family history.
