As 2021 draws to a close, Piccadilly records have revealed their annual Album of the Year rankings, picking out 100 standout records to have dropped over the last 12 months.
If we can put our faith in anyone when it comes to picking stellar soundtracks, few are better positioned than the folks behind this Manchester music stalwart.
Topping their list are Scottish post-rock outfit Mogwai and their mesmeric record ‘As the Love Continues’, second, is Little Simz and her blockbuster debut ‘Sometimes I might be Introvert’ and third is the North-West’s own Jane Weaver and her otherworldly ‘Flock’.
Manchester’s LoneLady sits in fourth with her electro-exploration ‘Former Things’ and delightfully moody Dry Cleaning complete the top five with ‘New Long Leg’.
A unique and unlikely joint effort up next, with Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra’s collaboration in sixth.
W.H. Lung’s ‘Vanities’, Snapped Ankles’ ‘Forest of Your Problems’, Tony Allen’s ‘There Is No End’ and John’s ‘Nocturnal Manoeuvres’ fill the remaining spots in Piccadilly’s top ten for the year.
